About Different Judges

Mandakolathur Patanjali Sastri was the second Chief Justice of India who succeeded J. H J Kania in 1951 and continued in office till 1954. He was born in Mandakolathur, in present-day Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu, on January 4, 1889.

Hon'ble Justice H.J Kania served as the first Chief Justice of India after independence. He was born on November 3, 1890, in Gujarat. He first studied B.A. from Samaldas College in Bhavnagarin, 1910. Following this, his alma mater became the Government Law College, Bombay from where he obtained his LL.B. degree in 1912. Subsequently, he pursued LL.M. from the same institution in 1913.

Hon’ble Justice Sabyasachi Mukherjee was the 20th Chief Justice of India. He was born on 1st June, 1927 in Kolkata. He comes from an affluent family as his father was the first Indian Director General of land records for Bengal Presidency. He received his education from Mitra Institute in Kolkata and then finished a degree from Presidency College Calcutta. He was deeply interested in the subject of Economics, and so he went on to study the subject from Calcutta University in 1946.

Hon’ble Justice Engalaguppe Seetharamiah Venkataramiah was born on 18th December 1924 in Karnataka. He received his education from Government Primary School Pandavapura and then went on to pursue his further studies from Maharaja’s College, Mysore. Thereafter, he obtained a law degree from Raja Lakmanagouda Law College, Belgaum

Hon’ble Justice Raghunandan Swarup Pathak was the 18th Chief Justice of India and was born on 25th November 1924 in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. His father was the former Vice-President of India. He received his formal education from St.Joseph’s College in Allahabad and later went on to study law from the Allahabad University

Hon’ble Justice Prafullachandra Natwarlal Bhagwati was born on 21st December 1921 in Gujarat. His father was a Supreme Court Judge himself. Therefore, he probably was destined right from birth to become a judge, and that is how he went on to become the 17th Chief Justice of India.

Previously, he was the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court and the acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court. He has additionally served as the president of the Andhra Pradesh Judicial Academy He is expected to retire on 26 August 2022. 

Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde is the son of Arvind Bobde, who was a former Advocate General of Maharashtra. Chief Justice Bobde practised in the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court for over 21 years before he was designated as a Senior Advocate in 1998. Chief Justice Bobde was appointed as an Additional Judge to the Bombay High Prades as on 29th March 2000 and 12 years later, on 16 October 2012 he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The Chief Justice then succeeded CJI Ranjan Gogoi and became the 47th Chief Justice of India on 18th November 2019.

Justice Indira Banerjee is the 8th woman to be a judge in the Supreme Court. She is presently one of the three female judges of the court.. Justice Banerjee pursued her education from Presidency College, Kolkata and College of Law, Calcutta University. In 2002, she was appointed as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court. She was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court on 5 April, 2017.

Justice Malhotra began her legal profession in 1983 and she specialises in arbitration law. She was empanelled as an Arbitrator with the Indian Council of Arbitration and served as a member of the High-Level Committee appointed to review the Institutionalisation of the Arbitration Mechanism in India. She has authored the 2014 edition of the commentary The Law and Practice of Arbitration in India.

Justice Sinha is the grandson of Babu Baldev Sahay, Bihar’s first advocate general, and Dr Raghunath Saran, personal physician to India’s first President Dr. Rajendra Prasad. He is the son of Benoy Sinh who retired as additional secretary in the Ministry of Power, Government of India. He studied law from Delhi University and practiced in the Patna High Court for 23 years on civil, constitutional, labour, service, commercial, company and criminal maters.

Justice Nazeer studied law in Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Law College, Mangalore. He litigated for 20 years in the Karnataka High Court. After taking his law degree, Nazeer enrolled as an Advocate on 1983 and practiced at the Karnataka High Court in Bengaluru. In May 2003, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court and was later appointed a Permanent Judge of the same High Court. In February 2017, while serving as a judge of the Karnataka High Court, Nazeer was elevated to the Supreme Court of India. 

Justice Mohan M. Shantangoudar began his practice in Dharwad and Bengaluru in the Chambers of Mr I.G. Hiregoudar and Mr Shivaraj V Patil, respectively. He began practising civil, criminal and constitutional matters independently in 1984. He served as Vice-Chairman (1991-1993) and Chairman (1995-1996) of the Karnataka State Bar Council. He was Karnataka’s State Public Prosecutor from 1999 to 2002.

Sanjay Kishan Kaul, being a Judge of Supreme Court of India is a former Chief Justice of Madras High Court and Punjab and Haryana High Court and former Judge of Delhi High Court. He has also served as Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court. 

Lavu Nageswara Rao is the 52nd in chief and Currently a judge of Supreme court along with being a member of Supreme Court collegium. He served as a member of SC bench for 12 years and was a Karnataka High Court judge.

Justice Ashok Bhushan graduated from Allahabad University in 1979. He began practicing civil law matters at the Allahabad High Court and worked as the Standing Counsel of Allahabad University and the State Mineral Development Corporation Limited. He was elected as Senior Vice-President of the Allahabad High Court Bar Association.
