Teaching is more than just a career option; it is a way people can be part of the education system and shape the country's future. Although this statement may sound like a cliché, it still stands true! A teaching career in the higher educational sectors, especially at the College level, is one of India's most desirable career choices today.

Law Professor

Law professors train aspiring attorneys in various areas, such as legal codes, courtroom practices, government regulations and legal ethics, and teach them strong communication skills. If you are considering a career as a law professor, you may want to know the pros and cons of this career field. Teaching law is not an easy object. Getting a job of a teacher to teach law is also not easy. To get a job as a teacher, you need to be very brilliant, smart and bright. Law teaching is an attractive career with a handsome salary. Maybe this is because of getting an adequate level of satisfaction as a teacher more than a lawyer. Teaching anyone is a good thing because introducing someone you need to learn something makes your knowledge stronger, giving you more level of satisfaction. It also helps you interact with the new generation,, which will help you learn new ways and techniques evenand the question raised by them, which never occurred to you in the process of learning. A teacher plays an integral part in spreading legal education in the country.

Eligibility criteria for a Law Professor

The eligibility criteria for recruitment to the post of law professors are as follows –

  1. Assistant Professor (Law) - Good academic record with at least 55% marks in the LL.M. Degree. The candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC, CSIR or similar test accredited by the UGC like SLET/SET.
  1. However, the candidates who have been awarded a PhD. Degree, are exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET.
  1. A PhD. Degree is a mandatory qualification for the direct appointment of Professors/Associate professors and promotion as Professors/Associate Professors.

Cons of Lectureship

Every career path with a list of its pros and cons. As right a career in lectureship may seem right, there are a few significant cons while taking this up on a professional front. One of the major disadvantages of being a legal professor in colleges is that due to the rise of population in the legal field, there has been a considerate increase in the competition while securing a position in this field. Even a talented and hard-working researcher who has published extensively and has teaching experience may not ever manage to land a permanent professor job.

Another disadvantage as we speak of is working for extended hours. Now, though we have mentioned flexible working hours in the pros section, this profession is such that professors are really worked up during quarterly or half-yearly exams. Working for extended long hours can be a con wherein you will have to sacrifice time with a social gathering or hobbies.


Pay Scale

The pay scale of Legal Lecturers in India depends on a pay band regulated by the academic regulators such as The University Grants Commission (UGC). For example, the average salary for an Assistant Professor of Law is Rs 550,000 per year.

However, on the contrary, the private institutions are slightly flexible with their remuneration packages as it comes alongside with specific bonuses and perks. This is usually given to retain and attract the best professors in the respective field, but that is highly subjective.
