HOW TO FILE A CYBER COMPLAINT?

Crimes done behind the PC are the 21st century’s problem. cybercrime is a criminal offence which includes a computer and a network. Only cyber safety helps us to avoid those risks and guard against their consequences because it’s impossible to avoid all hazards.

Cybercrime, in simple words, we can say that cyber crimes are crimes related to computer or computer oriented crime. It is a criminal offence which includes a computer and a network. Cybercrime threatens a person or individual or a nation’s security and financial health. Cybercrime surrounds itself with which many privacy concerns when the personal information is disclosed. The estimated annual damage to the worldwide economy within the year 2014 was $445 billion consistent with a report published that year. In 2018, a study by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies concluded that on the brink of $600 billion, nearly one-hundredth of worldwide GDP is lost to cybercrime annually.

According to Section 67 of Data Technology Act,2000,

“WHOEVER PUBLISHES OR TRANSMITS OR CAUSES TO BE PUBLISHED OR TRANSMITTED WITHIN THE ELECTRONIC FORM, ANY MATERIAL WHICH IS LASCIVIOUS OR APPEALS TO BE PRURIENT INTEREST OR TENDS TO DEPRAVE AND CORRUPT PERSONS SHALL BE PUNISHED”

In general, the definition of cybercrime can also be defined as “Any unlawful act where computer or communication device or network is employed to commit or facilitate the commission of crime”.

There are different types of cybercrime – such as cyber bullying, phishing, cybersquatting, data breach, cyber grooming, and many more.

CYBER SAFETY

In general, cyber safety means being safe and secure online. As we know, the web environment is filled with opportunities but also is filled with threats to our safety and security. Cyber safety helps us to avoid those risks and guard against their consequences because it’s impossible to avoid all hazards.

PROCEDURE TO FILE A CYBER CRIME COMPLAINT:

  • The first and foremost step is to file a complaint against cybercrime to the authority which is committed with the cyber cell of India? In recent times, various sections for investigating crimes in various cities are established but the cyber cell of India. These sections not only investigate the crime, but they also take the charge of reporting the crime on time. A victim can make a complaint against cybercrime at any time, whether online or offline mode. The cybercrime helpline number is also provided so that one can complain about cybercrime.
  • The victim must supply all the subsequent information like name, email address, and telephone number with an application letter addressing the top of a cybercrime investigation cell when filing a complaint.
  • The victim must also carry all the necessary documents so as to register a complaint. List of documents varies with the sort of cybercrime. One of the essential things while filing a complaint is to connect the documents which support the facts of the case.

In the case of other cyber crimes, one needs to choose the “Report Other Cyber crimes” section. It is required to register using the name and valid Indian mobile number. The person receives a One Time Password (OTP) on mobile number. The OTP remains valid for half-hour only. Once successfully registered the mobile number on the portal, the complaint should be reported by selecting the appropriate category and subcategory.

Under this section, fields are marked with a red asterisk (*) are mandatory. The police authorities must receive accurate and complete information associated with the complaint. Therefore, it is required to provide information like complainant’s name, phone number, email address, details and other necessary information supporting the complaint. Once the complaint has been reported on the portal, it shall be handled by the concerned cyber police or authority supporting the selection while reporting the complaint.

CONCLUSION

Though not all people are victims to cyber crimes, they’re still in danger. Cyber crimes vary, and that they don’t always occur behind the PC, but a computer executes them. The hacker could live continents faraway from its victim, and that he/she wouldn’t even know he/she is being hacked. Crimes done behind the PC are the 21st century’s problem. With the technology increasing, criminals don’t need to rob banks, nor do they need to be outside so as to commit any crime, and they have everything they need on their laptop. To be safe from cyber crimes one must confirm that their security software is current and updated, sign off their computer once they step away, go offline once they don’t need an internet connection and take advantages of security settings.
