If you are aspiring to be into the Army after choosing law as a career, the only option you have is JAG (Judge Advocate General). If you fulfil the required criteria, you can become a law officer and become a proud man/woman who is serving for his/her nation.

Military justice is the body of laws and procedures governing members of the armed forces. Legal issues unique to military justice include the preservation of good order and discipline, the legality of orders, and appropriate conduct for members of the military. Indian military aka Bharatiya Thal Sena is managed under the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and also has the third largest-defence budget in the world. To safeguard its interests, India has its acts related to Armed Forces, i.e. Army Act, Navy Act, and the Air Force Act. Few acts are related to Paramilitary forces like Border Security Force Act, Coast Guard Act, Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force Act, etc. military law was first established by General C.H.Harrington out of necessity to control interior affairs of the armed forces.

Judge Advocate General (JAG) is one of the departments of the Indian Army. All you need to do is to undergo SSB (Short Service Commission) interview and bring yourself into the merit list of the JAG department. There are very limited seats of vacancies, which are declared twice a year.

What is JAG (Judge Advocate General)?

    The post of Judge Advocate General is held by a major general who is the legal and judicial chief of the Army. The Judge Advocate General is assisted by a separate JAG branch which consists of legally qualified army officers. The Judge Advocate performs no functions, either as an advocate or as a judge. From the filing of drafts to appearing at courts and military tribunals, JAG officers are equal to the rank of lieutenant and are master in the practice of Military laws. Military laws are the bible for JAG officers.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

     The eligibility criteria for JAG in Indian Army are:

  1. The candidate applying must be an Indian citizen
  2. Candidate applying must be between the age group 21-27
  3. Candidate must secure 55% in graduation ( either 3-year course or 5-year course)

Physical exercise for screening

  • Running 2.4 km in 5 minutes
  • Pushups- 13 no
  • Sit-ups -25 no
  • Chin-ups- 6
  • Rope climbing- 3 meters

The selection procedure is very difficult, and the candidate must go through three stages of the selection procedure.

  1. The initial shortlisting of online applications will be done at Recruiting Directorate Army Headquarters, and the decision of DG Recruiting will be final.
  2. Those who qualify in stage 1 can appear for stage 2. It is divided into two stages. These stages are based on the Psychological Aptitude Test.
  3. Only those who qualify substage 1 of stage 2 will move forward for substage 2. It is based on Group tests, psychological tests, and interviews which will take four days.

After stage 2, the selected members shall be screened on medical grounds.

Tenure : The total period of 14 years, i.e. ten years of service plus extendable service for four years.

How to Apply

Applications will only be accepted online on the website www.joinindianarmy.nic.in. Click on ‘Officer Entry Apply/Login’ and then click ‘Registration’ (Registrations not required if already registered on www.joinindianarmy.nic.in). Fill the online registration form after reading the instructions carefully. After getting registered, click on ‘Apply Online’ under the Dashboard. A page ‘Officers Selection - ‘Eligibility’ will open. Then click ‘Apply’ shown against the Short Service Commission JAG Entry Course. A page ‘Application Form’ will open. Read the instructions carefully and click ‘Continue’ to fill details as required under various segments. Personal information, Communication details, Education details and details of previous SSB. ‘Save & Continue’ each time before you go to the next segment. After filling details on the last segment, you will move to a page ‘Summary of your information’ wherein you can check and edit the entries already made. Only after ascertaining the correctness of all your details, click on ‘Submit Now’. Candidates must click on ‘Submit Now’ each time they open the application for editing any details. The candidates are required to take out two copies of their application having Roll Number, 30 minutes after final closure of online application on last day.

Getting into the military is not a cakewalk. It requires hard work, smart work, and fitness. The lawyers who are working in JAG are professionals to the core and demand utmost discipline.
